Stories

Animals who stayed here.

Recoveries, long stays and courses of treatment, told plainly, and only where the owner or a published source made the story public.

Most of the animals who come here arrive at an unsettled moment. A surgery that needs weeks of quiet. A course of treatment at the veterinary hospital in Davis. A family called away with no notice and an animal who cannot simply be dropped somewhere.

These are a few of those stays, written the way they actually happened, with the setbacks left in. No stock photography of strangers, no invented testimonials. Where a story appeared in print or was shared publicly by the owner, the source is linked so you can read it yourself.

Sadie Mae · Ongoing Treatment

Sadie Mae

Catahoula / Rottweiler mix · More than three weeks · 16 radiation treatments over 23 days at the UC Davis veterinary hospital

Sadie Mae was eight when a tumor was found in her upper jaw. After surgery in Marin, her treatment plan called for sixteen radiation appointments over twenty-three days at the UC Davis veterinary hospital, a schedule her owner could not drive to and from every single day.

So she stayed in Woodland with Dawn. In the account published by the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine and written in Sadie Mae's voice, she says simply: "I stayed with Dawn in Woodland. She is a very nice person, and she took very good care of me."

UC Davis notes that Dawn was able to board Sadie Mae and transport her to the hospital for her multiple radiation treatments.

Sadie Mae went home to her owner, his garden, his cooking, and a bed made up beside his own.

Enzo · Chemotherapy Recovery

Enzo

Cat · Multiple stays · Supportive care after chemotherapy appointments

When Enzo began undergoing chemotherapy, his family found themselves navigating one of the most difficult experiences a pet owner can go through. His treatments required additional care afterward, including medications, keeping him clean and comfortable, and making sure someone attentive was there while he recovered.

That is when they found Dawn.

Enzo has stayed with Dawn multiple times following his chemotherapy treatments. On treatment days, Dawn was able to pick him up after his procedure and bring him back into her care. For his family, that meant knowing Enzo would not have to go through the recovery period without someone experienced and compassionate watching over him.

During every stay, Dawn treated Enzo as if he were one of her own. She made sure he received his prescribed medications, helped keep him clean and comfortable, paid close attention to how he was doing, and gave him the patience and affection he needed while recovering.

Just as importantly, Dawn kept his family updated throughout his stay. She shared regular updates about how Enzo was doing so that even when his family could not be there with him, they still felt connected to his care and knew he was safe.

For Enzo's family, that peace of mind meant everything. Going through chemotherapy with an animal you love is already incredibly difficult. Having someone you trust step in during those moments and care for your animal with genuine compassion can completely change the experience.

"We could not have been more grateful to find Dawn. She treated our Enzo like her own. She made sure he received his medications, kept him clean and comfortable, and kept us updated throughout his stay. During one of the hardest times in our lives, knowing Enzo was with someone who genuinely cared for him made a world of difference."

Dawn cared for Enzo after his chemotherapy appointments. His oncology team led his treatment; Dawn provided the supportive care and the steady updates in between.

A German Shepherd, seven years old

Dog · Five weeks · TPLO knee surgery, long restricted-activity recovery

TPLO recovery is measured in weeks of quiet. Restricted movement, controlled exercise, patience on both ends of the leash. It is difficult to manage in an ordinary household and nearly impossible in a busy kennel.

He stayed five weeks. His owner's public review describes what came back: extra pounds shed, leg strength regained, and a dog completely healed from the surgery.

In his owner's words: "He adores her and she clearly loved him back!!"
